Jake Kulak & the LowDown
Jake Kulak and the LowDown are honored to be nominated for a New England Music Award in the “New Act of the Year” Category. Nominees are chosen by a panel of music industry professionals and represent New England artists from various genres in popular music.
Jake Kulak is a 17 year old musician from Connecticut who plays blues and jazz guitar, along with classical piano. He started playing guitar when he was 11 years old. He received a Fender Squire as a Christmas present and immediately taught himself to play Screwdriver by the White Stripes. That song is a perfect example of how one guitar can express so much emotion. He then heard the White Stripes cover Death Letter and that led him to the music of Son House and other blues greats like Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, and BB King. The blues is at the heart of so many other types of music. He says, “When I play the blues, I play what I feel – not just the notes in front of me”. Today, he studies guitar with Frank Varela at Summit Studios.
